Mr M..M. Macdonald has been elected president of the Automobile Association (Southland).

Among the officers selected for New Zealand’s special military force is Captain J. M. Coutts (Wairarapa). Messrs H. E. Quinn, B. Thirkwell (Wellington) and B. R. Morton are among guests at. the Hotel Midland this week.

Mr M. Sayegh, business manager of Amalgamated Theatres, arrived in Masterton at noon today on a business visit.

Guests at the. Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs H. J. Thomas (Pukekoe), J. D. Jensen, J. Marshall, McCarley (Wellington) and Bushby (Napier). Mr C. H. W. Nicholls was yesterday reappointed the Wellington Education Board’s representative on the committee of the Otaki Health Camp Association.

Because of heavy demands on his time Mr R. O. Montgomerie has relinquished office as president of the Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr T. Currie has been elected president and Mr Montgomerie vice-president. Mr S. McNicol, the well-known Wel - lington representative Rugby player, is visiting Masterton as area organiser of the Physical Welfare and Recreation branch of the Internal Affairs Department. and is staying at the Empire Hotel.

Dr S. R. B. Cooke, formerly of Hamilton and Thames, has been appointed head research professor of metallurgy in the Montana School of Mines, Butte, Montana, United States. For the past four years Dr Cooke has been assistant research professor in the Missouri School of Mines, United States.

Advice has been received in Hastings of the death of Mr Michael Hull, aged 24, son of Mr and Mrs F. J. Hull, well-known residents of Hastings, as a result of an accident during Royal Air Force training operations in England. No details are yet available, but it is thought that the accident occurred during the weekend. Previous to his arrival in England about a month ago Mr Hull had 11 months’ training in Wellington and Christchurch. Mr A. Handyside, who has been on the staff of the Masterton branch of the Bank of Australasia during the past five years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to Kaitaia, North Auckland. He will leave on Saturday for his new sphere of activities. Mr Handyside has been a prominent tennis and badminton player in Masterton. He is a member of the Park Tennis Club and has represented Wairarapa at badminton. He is a valued member of the Optimist Club, having rendered excellent service as chairman. He has been associated with Y.M.C.A. activities and the Masterton Methodist Church for a considerable period. A cablegram received in Morrinsville yesterday states that Colonel Sir Stephen Allen, who is on a visit to England, has joined the Imperial Army and is stationed at a camp at Bulford. England. Sir Stephen Allen served throughout the Great War with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was wounded twice. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colon-el in the Auckland Regiment in 1917. He was awarded a D.S.O. and bar in 1918, and was made a C.M.G. in 1919. He was commander of the Ist New Zealand Infantry Brigade from 1920 to 1924, and from 1933 to 1937. He was an Hon A.D.C. to the GovernorGeneral from 1925 to 1928; mayor of Morrinsville, 1927-28; Administrator of Western Samoa. 1928-1931; member of the Central Transport Licensing Authority. 1932-34; and chairman of the Transport Co-ordination Board, 193537.
