Being dependent largely upon tourist traffic, Rotorua is faced with a serious unemployment problem as _ a result of the cancellation of tourist bookings, and also the restrictions which have been placed by the Government upon the use of petrol by private persons. Already the effect of the outbreak of war and the restriction of travel is being felt by the public and private hotels in the district. and in many cases cancellations of immediate bookings have been received. Hotel proprietors are also faced with the cancellation of heavy bookings made earlier for projected overseas cruise parties and centennial visitors. As a result of the considerably reduced business, drastic reductions in the staffing of hotels and boardinghouses seem inevitable, while it is understood that in certain cases a rationing of work has already been instituted. The staffs usually carried by Rotorua hotels are large, and it is probable that retrenchment will throw a large number out of employment,
