L. Scrivener for the position of Games Attendant at the Masterton Park for the coming season. The application was granted on the usual conditions. It was decided to tar seal the Cemetery Drive from the Cemetery entrance to the sexton’s office, at an estimated cost of £2B 10s. Consideration will be given to further sealing when funds are available. The Physical Welfare and Recreation District Committee was granted the free use of the Municipal halls for functions held during Recreation Week. A vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Robinson and Sons, Nurserymen, for their gift of 120 trees which have been planted to form an avenue upon the Waipoua River diversion. The Gas Manager' was granted permission to attend, at the council’s expense, the annual conference of the Gas Institute of New Zealand commencing at Auckland on November 15, 1939. It was decided that the minimum monthly charge of 5s be enforced for slot meters as well as for. ordinary meters. Mr G. T. Alley, officer in charge of the Country Library Service, advised that he would be pleased when visiting Masterton next to meet the council and discuss library matters and free library service in particular. A decision was made to have notices placed in the Reading Room placing a 15-minute time limit on newspaper reading when others are waiting. i A; request is to be made to the Chief Librarian. Society that People’s Day of the Wai-i rarapa Show, October 2G. be declared aI public holiday. It was decided that the request be complied with as from 11 a.m. on Show Day. The Inspector submitted a letter sent to the Hon W. Leo Martin, Minister of Agriculture, suggesting that _ the Wairarapa would be a very suitable district for the establishment of experimental herd testing for T.B. The In-i spector was commended upon the steps he had taken in bringing the matter to the Minister's notice. “I have been directed by the Masterton County Council to advise youthat it. has resolved to co-operate with I the Government in any steps that.maybe taken arising out of the recent de-j claration of war against Germany and. to that end an Emergency Committee has been appointed to deal with all matters of emergency that may arise,” stated a letter from the county clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley. “The council also desires to co-oper-ate in every possible way with your council so that united action may be taken in the district in the interests of the general public, should occasion be necessary." .
