MASTERTON TENNIS CLUB

A SATISFACTORY SEASON. ENCOURAGING INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP. The annual report of the committee of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club for the 1938-39 season states inter alia:— On the whole the season was much more satisfactory than for some years past. Weather conditions were good, enabling the maximum amount of play, while the condition of the courts was all that could be desired. Membership showed a very encouraging increase indeed, and at the end of the season stood as follows: —Active, ladies 46, men 50; honorary 8; life 6. A further increase in membership is necessary if the club is to function satisfactorily, and all members are urge to participate actively in the campaign for new members, and to hand in to any of the committee or to the hon secretary as soon as possible, any names for election. Thanks to our zealous groundsman (W. G. Bishop) the courts have an excellent covering of grass and should be in first-class order for the opening of the season. The North Island championships were held in conjunction with the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament on the club’s courts, and congratulations are extended to our club members, Mr P. Hawksworth on his fine performance in winning the singles title, and Mr and Mrs Hawksworth in winning the combined doubles. During the tournament a cabaret was run by Miss J. Betts and a number of helpers on behalf of the club, and our thanks are due to them for their efforts. It was a good evening’s fun and was also successful financially. The following members attained representative honours in the Association teams during the season: Mesdames A. H. Ward, P. Hawksworth, Misses D. Allan, K. Milne.. J. Betts; Messrs P. Hawksworth, E. M. Hodder, J. B. McPherson, M. Coney. Once again the Club’s thanks are due to Mr G. R. Jackson for the use of his office and room for committee and gen - eral meetings during the past year. We also acknowledge with thanks the services given by Mr A. D. Low in auditing the accounts for the year. The report is signed for the committee by Messrs E. M. Hodder (president) and A. H. Ward (hon secretary). The annual meeting of members of the club will be held on Thursday, September 28.
