ATTEMPT TO RALLY FORCES
Even now the Poles are bravely struggling to rally the forces. Women have been called up as constables and are parading in Zalesczyki in smart blue uniforms. A desperate effort is being made to collect the remainder of the army and withdraw it to the Pripet marshes. Zalesczyki presents a pitiable appearance. Wounded are coming in in hundreds and unwounded officers are arriving to direct the evacuation of families to Rumania. The town is bravely trying to run its business as usual. The shops are doing a roaring trade as the refugees spend their last Polish coins, knowing that they will be worthless outside the country. It was announced from Berlin that German bombers established contact with the Soviet troops. The location was not announced. Siege guns were reported to be closing in on Warsaw twelve hours after the expiration of the ultimatum, but the Ministry of Propaganda in Berlin claims it is without information regarding the city’s fate.
