PREPARATORY ACTION
GERMANS BRINGING UP MORE TROOPS FIGHTING BECOMING FIERCER. NAZI EVACUATION PLANS. ' NEW YORK. September 16. Germans are bringing up more troops to the western front, where fighting is becoming fiercer daily, says the Paris correspondent of the “New York Times.” It is most heavy at present on a front 20 miles- west of Saarbrucken. The object is possession of observation points dominating not onl.v the Saar Valley, but also parts of the West Wall. . / The purpose of the German attack near the Nied River was to regain observation points along the plateau, from which Saarluten could be brought under French fire. The German attacks were soon stopped. It is reported that at least 15 German and the same number or more French divisions are engaged on the Western Front, totalling 300,000 men. The Western Front activity is of a nature heralding large-scale action. The German reaction suggests that they are expecting a heavy blow. Activity is greatest, on a 12-mile sector facing Saarbrucken, where the French have continued to progress, taking two more villages. The chief work continues to be the preparation of positions from which to initiate “ulterior operations,” which is being done along the entire front. The French have never relaxed their pressure and never lost the initiative, the concentration of forces being completed and the armies nearly all in position. The British are fitting into the plan as they arrive, though it is believed that only the air force has been in action so far. German activity might presage a blow on their part, but a more general offensive is difficult. Moreover, the Germans continue to evacuate the populations of Saarland and the Palatinate. According to a Copenhagen message the Berlin correspondent of “Politiken” says that preparations are being
made for a great fight on the Western Front. Already vast territories of West Germany have been evacuated and it is expected that from 18,000,000 to 20,000,000 will eventually be moved to Central Germany. All ordinary duties of the Nazi Party organisations have been suspended in order to build up an inner front. It is officially confirmed in Berlin that towns near the Siegfried , Line have been evacuated, but it is described as a temporary measure.
Reports from Amsterdam state that the Germans have begun to evacuate the district around Aix-la-Chhpelle. Invalids and women over CO have already been moved to a safer area. .The imports add that the evacuation of Aix*'>.pelle may take place soon.
