REGENT THEATRE

TWO SPLENDID FILMS,

George Formby scores another hilarious success in “Trouble Brewing,” now showing at the Regent Theatre. His ridiculous antics plus his amusing songs brought continuous roars of laughter from the packed house at Saturday night’s performance. In “Trouble Brewing,” Formby plays the part of a printer turned detective, equipped with his own invention of special inks to trace offenders against the law. He is ably assisted by Gus McNaughton and the picture is a series of uproarious incidents culminating in a battle with counterfeiters fought in a brewery. That George, the hero of the battle, traps his enemies in a vat of beer is only incidental, but it is the manner in which he extracts so much humour from these “incidental” situations that makes a Formby, film so different from those of other comedians and so refreshingly comic. Th'6re may be Formby fans who think “Trouble Brewing” not Formby’s best film. That really does not matter because the only real standard of valuing the work of this comedian is by the laughs of the audience. Saturday night’s audience laughed throughout the film and that was their tribute to the fun of “Trouble Brewing.” A feature of the supporting programme is “The Warning,” reviewed in Saturday’s issue of the “Times-Age.” It is a film which verybody should see. It depicts Britain’s A.R.P. scheme in actual operation, fighting an air-raid on Nottingham. Nothing more wonderful in war pictures has been shown in Masterton and no film could be more timely.
