NUMBER OF SUBMARINES DESTROYED STATEMENT BY BRITISH ADMIRALTY. RUSSIA & JAPAN TALKING PEACE, The following reports from Daventry have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand National stations: — The British Admiralty states that a number of German submarines have been attacked and destroyed. Destroyers, patrol vessels and aircraft were constantly patrolling over wide areas. The survivors from the [submarines had been rescued wherever possible. It is stated that many German submarines in the Atlantic, according to a semi-official report from Paris, have shot their last torpedoes, and others are lacking fuel. The Ministry of Information announces that the British contraband control had intercepted a large quantity of goods consigned to Germany, including 28 000 tons of petroleum, and 26,000 tons of iron ore. ARMISTICE IN MONGOLIA. It is reported that Russia and Japan have reached an armistice in their undeclared war in the East. This, it is stated, may lead to a non-aggression pact. U.S.A. & THE ATHENIA. According to a statement by Mr Cordell Hull, Secretary of State, as far as America is concerned the sinking of the Athenia is not regarded as a closed incident. President Roosevelt states that he hoped to limit legislation at next week’s meeting of Congress to a revision of the neutrality law.
