CENTRAL SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. GIFT TO LIBRARY. The monthly meeting of the Central School committee was held last night, Mr J. E. MeV. Calwell presiding. There were also present: Messrs C. J. Braggins, A. V. Dixon, W. R. Nicol, N. Newman, A. J. Gibbs, F. A. Wesney, and G. R. Beecroft. Apologies for absence were received from Mr J. H. Cole and the headmaster. The headmaster submitted a very satisfactory report of progress and attendance. On the main school roll were 522 pupils, average attendance, 467.4; side school roll, 79, average attendance 69.8. The total, of both school rolls was 601, with an average attendance of 537.2.
Miss Taylor and Miss White notified theii- resignation, and the secretary was directed to write them letters of appreciation of their services and expressing good wishes for their future. The "Navy League requested permission for its representative to address the children at the school upon the activities of the League, and it was decided that this permission be granted for half-an-hour after school hours, subject to the voluntary attendance of the children.
The headmaster reported .that Mi’ Wm. Emerson had presented to the school 60 volumes of “Peoples of the World,” and also that Mrs Lenz had presented a beautiful doll for a raffle. The secretary was directed to write letters of thanks for these generous presentations and to express the appreciation of the committee in connection therewith.
The secretary was directed to write to the Education Board suggesting that the Board's supervisor inspect the work done in connection with the store and mower shed.
Messrs Braggins and Newman were deputed to inspect the condition of the caretaker’s house and instruct the secretary at their discretion. The Social Security Department notified that it was probable that the employment of the three workers a: the schools, under Scheme No. 13, would be discontinued after October 7. The chairman reported that application had been made by the Board to the Social Security Department foi their continuance as long as possible.
The Education Board advised that a grant had been made for renewing the boundary fences at the Masterton East School, which work would be carried out at an early date. Messrs Dixon, Cole and Wesnej were appointed visiting members foi the month.
