BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL EMERGENCY COMMITTEE SET UP. HEAVY TRAFFIC FEE ALLOCATIONS. (“Times-Age” Special ) The mouthy meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held last night. Those present were the Mayor Mr J. W. Card and Councillors W. Johnson. R. F. Watson. C. R. Skipage. C. C. Kenwood, T. G. Hardie. H. Cundy. B. Donald and N. B. Tait. The Mayor and Councillors Tait and Ken ward were appointed an emergency committee in connection with the present international situation. A letter was received from the Featherston Red Cross asking for the use of a room in the Anzac Hall for headquarters for an emergency committee should the need arise for such committee’s existence. A further letter from the society stated that the members desired to offer their services in any capacity that might be deemed necessary by the council should the occasion arise.
It was-decided to inform the society there at the present time the Council did not wish to have the hall used by any organisation, but that the society could co-operate with the council's emergency committee should the need arise. The Masterton county council advised that all local bodies in the district had agreed to an allocation of 25 per cent for boroughs and 75 per cent for counties in regard to heavy traffic licence fees. February 10, 1940, had been fixed as the date for local centennial celebrations. . The Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society asked that the council declare Thursday, October 26, which is People’s Day at the show a public holiday from 10 a.m. The proposal was agreed to. The Masterton Municipal Silver Band wrote thanking the borough council for its donation of £5 towards its fund. The Commissioner of Transport wrote asking the council to display posters drawing attention to the necessity for proper equipment when cycling at night. The letter stated that of 19 cycle fatalaties during the past four months 13 riders had been killed at night. The ranger reported having dealt with two cases of wandering sheep and 12 head of cattle.
