GERMAN NOTE ON POISON GAS NOT TO BE EXCEPT IN RETALIATION., BRITISH SHIP ATTACKED IN ATLANTIC. The following reports issued from Daventry have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand national stations; — Speaking in the House of Lords, Lord Halifax said a Note had been received from Germany stating that poison gas would not be used during the present war so long as her en- . emies refrained from using if. Eprd Halifax said it appeared that the Note placed no limitations and applied to all countries at war with Germany. According to a report from America, the British ship Vancouver City was attacked in the Atlantic. The crew took to the boats and were, picked up by a Dutch tanker, assisted by an aeroplane. GLOOM IN BERLIN. Life in Berlin is said to be more gloomy every day. There are two meatless days every week, on Mon- • days and Fridays, with very little meat on other days. Next week petrol will be more stringently rationed. A serious shortage of domestic coal is feared. Two strikes in Germany are reported to .have occurred last week. A number of arrests were made. The Ministry of Information states that no German cruisers are believed to be at sea, as was the case in 1914. Wreckers are reported to be active in Slovakia and stern action has been taken against them. The British tanker, British Influence, 8500 tons, has been torpedoed. The crew has been saved. Three lives were lost in the sinking of the Vancouver City.
One person was killed and two injured when a bomb exploded outside an hotel in Johannesburg. The bomb was thrown from a passing car.
