Good fields are engaged for all events on the first day of the Avondale Cup in which horses of class will face the starter. Saturday. Main interest will be centred round the running of. the Avondale Cup in which horses of of class will face the starter. Another event in which considerable interest will be displayed is the Champion Plate, and here again the field is a good one. Betting will be the win and place system.

The chance of Royal Dance must be seriously considered. Mia Acrea is a young horse which might command a fair share of the betting. During the winter Tutor was placed on several occasions and is expected to go well. Of the rest Kittie and Bisquit appear the best but public support may come

In all probability there will be a division in the Trial Plate. Hunto ran fourth at Pakuranga and his finish suggests that he might be well worth considering. Pern is also considered by experts as being a good sort worthy of the greatest respect. The Dozer ran third in his first race and should not be far away again. Bronze Emerald, Crestman and Imperator are all expected to be on hand at the right end. In an open event the public may favour Hunto Pern Bronze Emerald

Wyndora .... 7 7 Mintlaw registered some quite good performances last season and should not be very far behind the leaders in the fight for positions. Sebrof and The Trimmer must be given a chance; so must Spearford and Foxmund. Bronze Moth is a brilliant horse and should go well. Last season Native Song was first home in four events and in some circles this horse is expected to fill a place. Royal Tray, Greek Queen and Wyndora all won as two-year-olds and all three have prospects. Of the others Royal Message and Pantheist look the best. Support may be offering for Bronze Moth Native Song Royal Tray

King Rey is almost sure to be well supported and it will be interesting to see how he goes on the flat after the hurdles. Ned Cuttie at the weight must be considered, while Master Brierly might spring a surprise. Lowenberg and Tidewaiter figured in the triple dead-heat at the Grand National meeting and both these horses must be given a great chance. Jack Tar is capable of winning in this company but might not be quite in form. Kena at 7.8 looks a good bet and should not be far away when the final numbers go up. The Cardinal will be well backed and should give a good account. Of the rest Black Musk and Airam appear the best. Those finding favour, however, may include Tidewaiter Lowenberg The Cardinal

A horse who impresses greatly in this race is Hagen who has won five races. Hagen has both speed and sta - mina and should be well supported. Our Jean, Silver Stick, and Classform are considered by many to have more than average chances. Erlick and Orelio must not be overlooked and all three horses should be on hand in the final run home. Brazen Bold won in fine style recently and should be ready for this event. Supported horses may include 'Hagen' Erlick Orelio

No doubt the top weight in the Fly ing Handicap, Majority, will be well backed and this horse should be on hand at the finish. Reports state that Francis Drake has been working out well and this horse might command a good portion of the money. Orate has also pleased at work. The brilliant Valimeen is expected to be well forward at the finish and the chance of Prince Acre is being seriously discussed by some. Marie’s Acre is a good one and must be considered. Bachelor King at 7.0 looks a good punt. Te Monowai, Broriweh and Brazilian should be on hand for most of the way, but the public may favour Majority Bachelor King Marie’s Acre

Susan is a recent winner. She is a solid stayer and the fact that she is in form will probably find her plenty of support. Saccone runs well but has no form that impresses unduly. Valdene has won over this distance and might be a hard horse to beat.. Royal Abb is favourably considered by many and might be handy. A solid finisher, Raceline is sure to command respect. Right Royal was second to The Cardinal recently and it is understood that he has been showing’ well at work. Last season Prival and Vaalstar were winners and should give the top weights something to think about. DEATH OF GAY SON. PALMERSTON N„ September 14. Gay Son, who came on to Awapuni from Wanganui, died here from internal injuries. Gay Son was a four-year-old horse by Beau Pere out of the Lord Quex mare La Moderne, and last Saturday he ran second in the open sprint at Wanganui. As a three-year-old last season hew on the A.R.C. Liverpool Handicap, the C.J.C. Members’ Handicap, the Woodville Gothard Memorial Handicap, and the A.R.C. Clifford Plate. RACING IN AUSTRALIA ROSEHILL MEETING. ACCEPTORS FOR SATURDAY. High Caste will have a chance to rehabilitate himself in the Rosehill Guineas, but will meet with strong opposition from ■ Reading, Bonnyloch, and Wilson. Defaulter seems destined to return home. His trainer is not optimistic over his leg improvement, and no attempt is being made to take him out of a walk.

A report comes from Melbourne today that Ajax is showing of lameness. His heel is bruised, and his preparation meantime is interrupted.
