GOLF NOTES
RIVERSIDE CLUB GAMES RECENT PLAY. FURTHER CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS.
(By
"Long Drive.")
The handicapper of the Riverside Golf Club has had a busy time of late and many of the players are returning cards of 69 net instead of four and five strokes' below par, as was often the case. In the second round of the men’s championship, matches resulted as follow: — Senior; G. F. Candy beat L. Roff; M. A. Rawlins beat D. Costello; J. Thornton beat B. Summers; J. Bell beat J. C. Skeet. Intermediate: W. Palamontain beat R. Wearne; S. Wyatt beat R. Welling-, ton. Junior: M. Manson beat F. Dwyer; G. Murdoch beat R. Castles. G. Murdoch is in great, form at present. He must be in training for the junior championship. His card of 69 net was a good -effort as 3 sevens appear on it. The best hole this player had was the 10th when he scored a "birdie” 2. The best match of the day was that between J. Thornton and B. Summers. The former was in great form, completing the course in 73. Summers put up a great fight and went under 3 and 2. In a semi-final match in the "Bobbin” competition, J. Bell defeated F. Pool 7 and 6. In this match the superior putting bf Bell was the deciding factor. As often Pool would be on the greens for his second and would then take three putts. In the other semi-final, D. Costello defeated K. Knox 1 up at the 18th. This was a great struggle, Costello sinking a putt from the edge of the green for a “birdie” 2 when he was two down and four to go. He completed the second nine holes in 39. H. Knox is a player who has been
improving this year and returned a card of 69 net. The previous weekend this player defeated V. C. Taylor, who is well known as a sound match player. The best card of his career was handed in by F. E. Wells, 88, 20, 68. He took 44 each way. R. Hatch played to within two strokes of his new handicap. His score should have been much lower. Eleven lives appeared on his card and fours on the three bogey 3 holes. G. Longworth has returned to form and played to two strokes of his handicap. His score could have been reduced much lower as he took a 9 at the Cottage. W. Rew is a most consistant scorer, as week after week he plays to within a few strokes of his handicap. The winner of the medal round was B. Summers. This player has been put Sag some good scores of late and is now playing on a 10 handicap The men are not the only players who have had marathon matches as playing in the semi-final of the ladies’ intermediate championship, Miss Dohnt defeated Mrs J. C. Skeet at the 22nd. All competitions in connection with the chamnionship etc., have now reached the final stages and competitors are reminded that these matches may be played at any time and not to wait until the final day, set by the committee, for the completing of these events.
