A fire last night among the oil and paint stocks of G. E. Crane and Son’s warehouse, adjacent to Circular Quay, caused a heavy blanket of smoke in all parts of the city, penetrated tall buildings in the danger zone and gave nearly a hundred firemen a worrying time. Several were overcome by smoke. The fire originated in a basement, which had to be flooded with water from dozens of hoses.’ Several firemen,, wearing smoke helmets, had to swim through the water to reach safety.
