GREYTOWN

WAR ASSISTANCE WOMEN’S ORGANISATION. There was a large attendance of ladies at the meeting called by the Red Cross Society in the Town Hall yes terday afternoon. Mrs A. W. Horton (Mayoress) occupied the chair. Mrs G. R. Jury, the secretary of the local branch of the Red Cross Society, explained that the meeting had been called to organise war assistance work under one head. So as not to overlap. It was pointed out that there were 14 different women’s committees working for various objects in Greytown, and it was considered that for war purposes these should combine. An executive committee was formed to consist of Mrs A. W. Horton (Mayoress), Mrs G. R. Jury (secretary), Miss Higginson; Mrs Balfour (representing the Borough Council) and the president and secretary of all the local institutions. Those present formed themselves into a general committee. . A number of apologies for absence were received but all expressed their willingness to assist. Miss Barnett, Matron of the Masterton Hospital, was present and gave an address on Poland. She stated that the branch could do very useful work immediately by perhaps collecting and making 'clothes fqr the people of that devastated country. It had been her good fortune to visit Poland recently and she could understand their plight. Miss Higginson interestingly spoke on first aid work. The executive is to meet in the' Council Chambers on Monday at 7.30 p.m. Mrs Ticehurst, who was unable to be present, forwarded £1 towards the funds. . Miss Wyett offered the use of her store room as a Red Cross depot. Personal. Mr and Mrs H. J. Nightingale have returned from a holiday spent in Wellington. '
