TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
MEETING IN MASTERTON INTERESTING TRAVEL TALK. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild opened its meeting yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.C.A. Hall with the singing of the National Anthem, the reciting of the. Aspiration and a prayer for peace. Mrs W. H. Judd (president) was absent owing to illness. Mrs Burke presided over a very large attendance of members. A vote of sympathy with Mrs Judd was passed and members expressed the wish that she would soon be restored to health. Mrs Church spoke most interestingly on “Jersey, Channel Isles.” She told of the modes of reaching Jersey from London, and said that,so popular was the lovely little island that in two days as many as 1121 passengers had arrived there. They were a very English people and had helped William the Conquerer to conquer England Although so very old and historical, and still clinging to many of its old customs, Jersey was nevertheless very modern. It was renowned for its special “Jersey Eau-de-Cologne,” the recipe for which was strictly guarded. Mrs Church was warmly thanked for her particularly interesting travel talk. A very pleasing quartette “Nocturne” was sung by Mesdames Taylor, Scrivener, Dagg and Graham. The competitions resulted as follows: —Article from felt hat, Mrs Scharnweber 1, Mrs Coe 2, Mrs Kerr 3. Shortbread, Mrs Snowsill 1, Mrs Holtham 2, Mrs Neilson 3. Buffet afternoon tea was served. Miss Stubbings was introduced and welcomed and presented with a shoulder spray. She had with her eighteen little children, members of her Rhythmic Band They looked very smart, dressed in their white and gold band costumes. Miss Stubbings explained the building up of a percussion band and the benefits gained by the children. The performances of the children were very enjoyable and they showed evidence of careful training. By request the entertainment concluded with a pianoforte duet played by the little girls who had gained first place at the recent Wellington competitions. • Members were most appreciative and passed a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Stubbings. The singing of the Ode brought the meeting to e close.
