: —» —~ BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr W. Simpson), Councillors Marenzi, Simmers, Page, Olsen, Ryan and Priest. The‘following report was submitted by the Town Clerk: —District Fund Ac. dr., £365 10s 4d; Domain Ac. cr., £6 12s 6d; rate arrears, £426 16s lOd; cemetery arrears, £8; library arrears, £1 17s 6d. Reports as follows were adopted:— Works Committee: During the month patching of bitumen on Main Highway No. 477 and deepening watei* tables, which were inadequate to deal with the water was carried out. A considerable amount of metalling has been necessary. A start has been made filling up the Children’s Playground area. Reserves and Cemetery: Two hundred and fifty Lawsoniana trees have been planted mostly by the boundary fence at the cemetery and some to shelter the cookhouse at the Domain. Shrubs, etc., at Cliff Walk have been trimmed, but trimmings still need removal. The road in the cemetery would be improved if the grader could go up and down it. The plans of the proposed apparatus for the Children’s Playground were placed before councillors, the equipment to be as follows: —Log swing, double sea-saw, boat swing, double swing, ocean wave, giant rock-a-by and a baby glide. The cost was stated to be £lB7. On the motion of Councillor Ryan, seconded by Councillor Page, it was decided to put the work in hand at once. Councillor Olsen drew attention to the fact that a rather serious break in a water main on the main road. He thought the time had arrived when an overhaul of all valves and water cocks should be undertaken. It was decided that two or three hours in the afternoons be given to the work. Councillor Priest brought up the matter of erecting the names of the streets. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that Councillor Priest go into the matter. Councillor Olsen made reference to the Sunday evening rail-car service to Wellington. He stated that many boys working in Wellington liked to come home for weekends, but the service provided was quite inadequate and seats for Sunday could not be booked on the previous Thursday and people had to stand on the journey. He moved that the council appeal for a better service. The motion was carried.
