MINIATURE RIFLES WEEKLY COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weekly competitions of the Carterton Miniature Rifle Club were held last night when there was a good attendance of shooters. Horrey and R. Ordish. Personal Items. Mr P. Rowlings, of Riwaka, Nelson, is visiting Clareville and is the guest of Mr and Mrs H. Abbott. The many friends of Mr C. J. Fisher, of Costly Street, will regret to learn that he is confined to his bed suffering from a strained back. P. & A. Society. The monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society will be held on Saturday next at 10.30 a.m. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PARKVALE MEETING. The monthly meeting of members of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall, yesterday afternoon, and was well attended, Mrs N. Peacock presiding. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship, the Aspiration and a prayer for peace. ' Mrs A. Ward was elected a member of the Institute. Mesdames N. Peacock and W. Adlam were chosen to represent the Institute at a conference to be held in Martinborough next month, and all members were asked to be present if possible.’ . A questionnaire on war work was discussed and answered by those present. Members decided whole-heart-edly to give .their support to any work they might be called up to do in connection with the war. Final arrangements were made for the concert and dance to be held in the Parkvale Hall on September 22. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss J. Warrington for printing posters for the concert and also to Mr N. Peacock for offering to take charge of stage

fittings. Mrs Peacock thanked Mrs B. Renall /’for the social she organised in aid of the Institute funds. Mrs Renall amid applause handed in £5 odd as the result of the social, and thanked all who helped her in this effort, especially mentioning Mrs L. Rayner for the donation of the dinner and Miss M. Adlam and Mr W. Ward for having taken charge of table tennis, etc. A most interesting and instructive

demonstration on smocking was given >■ by one of the members, Mrs E. McGarvie. Two or three of the finished garments which she displayed, were greatly admired by members. Mrs McGarvie was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The monthly competitions judged by two visitors, Mrs W. Ashwood and Swanerd, resulted as follows: —Seniors —Shortbread, Mrs W. Renall, 1; Miss E. Martin 2, Mrs M. McKinnon 3. Best bulb: Mrs R. Williams, 1; Miss L. Rayner 2, Mrs H. Rayner, 3. Junior —Best articles made from a sugar bag, Miss S. Rayner, 1; Miss A. Williams, 2; Miss J. Warrington, 3. Best bulb: Miss W. Rose 1, Miss J. Warrington 2, Miss E. Brassel 3. Potatoes were distributed to members fbr the potato growing competition.

A competition arranged by Mrs B. Renall was won by Mrs J. Rayner, sen. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. George, L. Rayner, N. McKinnon and Miss H. McKinnon.
