Mr W. L. King has been elected president of the Canterbury Cricket Association. Mr and Mrs J. P. Johnson, of North High Street, will leave Carterton tomorrow to take up their residence in Masterton. The Rev Dr R. C. Gillie, who has been supplying at St David’s Presbyterian Church, Auckland, during the absence of the Rev W. Bower Black, has decided to return to England because of the outbreak of war. Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs E. G. Milton (Palmerston North), L. P. Winchcombe (Wellington), S. C. Smith, R. Gordon (Wanganui), S. Johnston, W. Rogers, A. Goldsmith. J. Gardiner (Featherston). The funeral of the late Mrs J. L. White took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The Rev. F. J. Parker conducted the services at the residence and graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs D. Brown, G. Wildish, T. Chamberlain and F. G. Rutter. A large number of wreaths were received. Guests at the Hotel Midland. Masterton, include Messrs W. J. Wilson (Palmerston North). H. J. Davis (Dannevirke), H. Grundy (Hastings). A. Alexander, S. Whittaker, H. Holland, Fl. Carey, L. Sims, W. Dunford, J. E. Fitzgerald (Wellington), J. A. Toogood (Ngaiana) and E. Kiely (Wellington). The death occurred in the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, of Miss Jean Haslam, only daughter of Mr and Mrs C. N. Haslam, of Rugby Street. Christchurch, and formerly of Masterton. Deceased was a teacher at the Ashburton High School. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr and Mrs Haslam in their bereavement.
