GREYTOWN
BRIGADE MEETING SERVICE HONOURS PRESENTED. (“Times-Age" Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Fire Brigade held last night. Superintendent J. Wood presided over a full attendance. / The secretary reported that the balance sheet for last year had been approved by the auditors. It was decided to order 400 ft of new hose for immediate delivery. As the Borough foreman had informed the Superintendent that he did not possess a plan of the fire plugs in the Borough it was agreed that the brigade supply one for his use. & The reply received from the Power Board by the Borough Council in reference to their application for a resident troubleman was discussed by the Brigade members, and it was decided to ask for a conference with the Electric Power Board engineer' and the council. The following service honours were presented:—2 year bar, secretary H. G. Carter, making 15 years’ service; 2 year bar, T. J. O’Brien, making 13 years’ service; 2 year bar, Deputy W. Wood, making 11 years’ service. Amongst those present at the meeting was life member W. Gates, who is on a visit to Greytown. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. Th monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School committee was held last evening. There were present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), Mrs Knell (secretary), Messrs W. Grigg, J. Herod, G. Robinson, W. G. K. Wiggins and the headmaster Mr S. C. Shedden. The chairman welcomed the new members, Messrs Grigg and Robinson, who replace Messrs Graham and Basset who have left the district. The headmaster reported that the primary roll number had increased to 304. The secondary department roll was now 37. ■ Several pupils had left to take positions. Mr Herod had visited the school during the month and addressed the pupils. It was expected that the entries for the calf and lamb rearing would be much larger this year. A demonstration of educational moving pictures is to be given by Mr Wiggins on Wednesday night.
Mr A. J. Lane has left the staff on transfer and Mr R. P. Anker has taken his place. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £4 3s lid.
The grant of £l.O has been received from the Town Lands Trust for the school library. It was decided to apply for a subsidy on this. The staff is to be requested to compile a list of books required.
Advice was received from the Social Security Department, Masterton that in future expenditure on ground improvement would be taken over by the Education Department, under scheme 13.
