ABOUT HORSES

The Riccarton trainer C. Dawson is at present working a three-year-old gelding by Hoylake from the Solferino mare Silk Stocking, formerly owned by Mr R. W. Franks, who bred the useful Silk Arrow from her. The Hoylake gelding is being trained for Mr W. A. Franks. Rebel Lad has been put into work again by D. Cotton, and the Robespierre gelding looks in sound and robust condition to undergo another preparation. Cotton is also now training the four-year-old gelding Pink Lad, byPink Coat from Carette, dam of Locksley. Martian (a great sire of stayers) equalled Heroic’s record in being leading sire in New Zealand on seven occasions, but only six of them were in succession. Many of his best winners scored heavily in Australia, among them Sasanof (Melbourne Cupi A.J.C. Spring Stakes, Chelmsford Stakes, etc), The Hawk (who defeated Beauford at Randwick), Rapine (who swept the board in the long races at Randwick at one autumn meeting), Star Stranger (A.J.C. Metropolitan), Cherubini (Australian Cup), The Cypher (beaten half a head in the Melbourne Cup), Cupidon ' (A.J.C. Derby), Reputation (a w.f.a. winner), and Naos, second to Spearfelt in the Melbourne Cup and the Australian Cup.
