THE MAKOGAI APPEAL.
J.\ a letter which appears today, the hon. secretary of the Makogai Leper Fund, Mr. P. J. Twomey, of. Christchurch, begs that the unfortunate and suffering folk in whom he lakes so kindly an interest may not be forgotten altogether in spite of the extent to which public attention is now absorbed in the outbreak of a European war. ft may be hopeless to expect as wide a response as is usually made to the annual appeal on behalf of the leper patients, but here and in other parts ol the Dominion there are no doubt some people who will still think with sympathy of those upon whom the hand of misfortune has been laid so heavily and will not allow even a war to deter them from giving that sympathy practical expression. As may be seen from his letter, Mr. Twomey proposes to close his appeal at an earlv date —as soon as fund's are in hand which will make it possible to give some little gifts at Christmas time to each of the 619 lepers at Makogai. This emphatically is an instance in which those will give twice who give quickly.
