UNITED STATES DECLARES NEUTRALITY

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT. SHIPS NOT TO BE ESCORTED. The following reports issued by the short-wave station at Daventry (England) have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand National station:— America has proclaimed her neutrality in the present conflict. President Roosevelt said this would prevent the supply of planes to belligerent nations in spite of orders already placed. American vessels would not be provided with naval escorts. A number of destroyers had been manned for patrol work in United States waters. The naval forces in the Panama Canal might be augmented. The Poles claim that 38 Polish aircraft flew over Berlin and returned safely. Heavy fighting continues in Silesia. There has been a rapid movement of Polish troops to the south. The Poles claim to have captured a large number of tanks and lorries and many prisoners. The German High Command claims advances on all fronts. The advance towards Cracow continues. News has been received in London of the sinking of three more ships, including the German steamer- Olinda and the Carl Fritzen. The Poles assert that the German ail- force ■is concentrating its attacks on the populations of small towns and against train's conveying refugees. British vessels have attacked German submarines in several localities. It is officially stated that there is reason to believe that the British Air Force raid on German battleships was more successful than was at first supposed to be the case. \ . Three German ships which might have been converted into armed raiders have been destroyed in the Atlantic. Several British ships have been attacked and some sunk by submarines. MORE LEAFLETS DROPPED. ANOTHER AIR FORCE FLIGHT OVER GERMANY. Another extensive reconnaisance flight was carried out ovex- Germany by the R.A.F. and three million more leaflets were dropped. As on the previous occasion, all the aircraft returned safely. No resistance was encountered from enemy aircraft.
