SERIOUS DISORDERS
REPORTED IN GERMAN CITIES AND IN CZECH TERRITORY. GERMAN TROOPS DESPATCHED. | (Received This Day. 9.40 a.m.) PARIS, September 5. A French radio agency reports serious disorders in the Cologne, Dusseldorf and Essen regions of Germany, while Zurich despatches report disorders in Moravia and Bohemia. The despatches state that heavy detachments have left Dresden and Leipzig for Bohemia and Moravia, where they have occupied edifices with ma-chine-guns. The principal disturbances are at Brno, Prague, Pilsen and the concentration camps of Czech refugees in Slovakia. EARLIER RIOTING IN SEVERAL GERMAN CITIES. INCLUDING STUTTGART & MUNICH. PARIS. September 5. The radio refers to indications of serious disorders during the past few days in several German cities, including Stuttgart and Munich. NOT OUR WAR DECLARATION BY GERMAN • SOCIALISTS. (Received This Day. 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK. September 5. A United Press London correspondent states that the Independent Labour Party has announced that it has received a declaration from the Independent Socialists of Germany that the masses of the German people “do not want this war. This war is not our war. This fight is not our fight, and we ask you in the midst of death and destruction not to forget the ideals for which we died in torture.” PROMISED SHOCK COMMUNISTS & SOCIAL DEMOCRATS. DEATHBLOW TO GERMANY FROM WITHIN. MELBOURNE, September 5. A British liner arrived today with 497 passengers, including refugees from the Continent. They had heard of the outbreak of war while at sea. Czechs and Slovaks aboard pledged themselves to return to join the Sokol Legion to fight with Britain for the restoration of their independence. A spokesman for the refugees declared that Germany was going to get a shock before long. “Our legion intends to join 6,000,000 Social Democrats and 5,000,000 Communists in Germany, and at the first defeat suffered by Germany, they will-strive to deal a deathblow from within,” he said.
SUPPORT FOR BRITAIN
AID OFFERED FROM MANY QUARTERS THE RALLY OF.DOMINION OPINION. ARABS AND JEWS READY TO ASSIST. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 4. Close upon the remarkable rally of Dominion opinion behind 'Britain’s stand against aggression manifested in Mr Menzies’ broadcast in which was announced the Australian declaration of war on Germany, in Canada’s statement of policy in connection . with which Mr Chamberlain sent a message of appreciation to Mr Mackenzie King, and in the telegram from New Zealand announcing the proclamation of a slate of war witn t-fermany, comes evidence from other parts of the overseas Empire and British mandated territory of the sympathy and support which is forthcoming for the United Kingdom in the struggle for liberty and law in the relations of European States upon which it has embarked. Not the least remarkable is the manner in which both Arabs and Jews in Palestine have demonstrated their wish to give assistance in the overthrow of Nazi tyranny. In the neighbouring Transjordan a similar spirit is abroad, and the Emir has expressed to the Colonial Secretary his “wholehearted loyalty and that of his people.” This year Britain made constitutional changes in Transjordan which permitted the setting up of democratic forms of government, and this trust has been repaid in this crisis with this welcome response. A practical offer of help which Britain accepted with deep appreciation came today from the Government of Nepal, which announced its willingness to send 8000 Nepalese troops for service with the forces in India during the present emergency. CANADA’S PART QUESTIONS FOR PARLIAMENT. OTTAWA. September 4. There is no official pronouncement of Canada’s technical status of war, but it is believed that aggressive action like capturing or attacking a German ship can only be taken after a formal declaration of war. It is assumed that till this is announced Canada’s only war effort will be defensive. The Government’s declared policy is that Parliament shall decide whether there is to be peace or war. It will seek authority to give the most effective co-operation with Britain immediately Parliament meets. The Conservative Opposition caucus will meet tomorrow to discuss the extent of Canada’s participation. It is expected that it will fully support the Government in a policy of vigorous cooperation with Britain.
