ESPERANTO
MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. At the weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club held last evening in the clubroom, Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presided over a satisfactory attendance of members. Correspondence in Esperanto received during the week from-abroad and presented by the secretary, Mr W. H. King, comprised a letter from Poland, postcards (for the postcard evening to be held next month) from England, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Sweden, U.S.A, and Yugoslavia. There were also journals from France and America. A report regarding the weekly tuition given to the local Scouts’ Esperanto class and an informative address delivered to the Optimists’ Club was submitted by the secretary, who also announced that he had attended at Wellington last Saturday a feature picture in which Esperanto is used to a certain extent. The president referred to Esperanto during the last war and reviewed the position consequent upon the outbreak of war on September 4. He mentioned that Esperanto had been and always will be regarded as an instrument of peace, although international conflict would undoubtedly temporarily check the dissemination of the tongue. The international language movement was now strong enough to outlive any obstacle and so Esperanto would go on from Strength to strength. Tuition of a varied nature and extending over an hour was provided under the direction of the secretary, following which Mr W. J. Beresford gave a reading in Esperanto entitled “Tagjurnalaj Raportoj” (Press Reports). The meeting concluded with the theme song “Venas Nur la Hor.” (Now is the Hour.)
