BANNIN SHIELD CARTERTON BEAT HASTWELL. JUNIOR PLAY-OFF NECESSARY. The Wairarapa Hockey Association fixtures on Saturday saw a start made with the Bannin Shield knockout competition for the senior grade, while a start was also made with the ColeBurgess Cup matches in the junior division. The junior competition was fin- , alised by the playing of the CollegeCarterton. game, which had been postponed. Conditions were ideal on Saturday and some fast hockey was seen. Carterton easily disposed of Hastwells when they met at Carterton. the score being 5/1. Hastwell failed to show anything like their true form and at no .stage of the game was the issue in doubt. On the Lansdowne grounds Kiwi and Dalefield fought out a hard and fast game. There was nothing between the teams and play was very even and at times too vigorous. At the call of time the score stood at 1 -all but in the rules of the Bannin Shield an outright win is necessary and an extra ten minutes was played. Kiwi eventually winning the match by 2 goals to 1. R. Clarke scored both goals for Kiwi and S. Knutson scored for Dalefield. College, by defeating Carterton, have drawn level in the championship points with Wesley and a play-off will be necessary to decide the winners. These teams were joint winners of the championship last year, the play-off having ended in a draw. RESULTS' AT a GLANCE. Senior. t Carterton 5, Hastwell 1. Kiwi 2, Dalefield 1. Wesley a bye. Junior.
