DAVIS CUP SURPRISE. AUSTRALIANS DEFEATED. i By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, September 2. In the Davis Cup final AmeLica (holders) won both the first day’s singles. Riggs defeated Bromwich, 6-4, 6-0, 7-5. Parker defeated Quist, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Riggs volleyed with fiendish skill and blasted Bromwich from the court. The Australian recovered at the beginning of the third set and led 4-0. but the American won the next three. Bromwich took the eighth and the American the last Tour in a row. Quist, after an indifferent beginning, recovered finely to win the second set, and after a comparatively even third he exploited lobs and drop shots to take the fourth. The final set was an exciting struggle, the Australian hammering Parker’s forehand with success and the latter winning points with superb placements. WIN FOR QUIST & BROMWICH.. SUPERIOR IN VOLLEYING. (Received This Day; 10.10 a.b.) NEW YORK, September 3. In the doubles Quist and Bromwich defeated Hunt and Kramer 5/7, 6/2, 7/5, 6/2. There was little to choose between the teams although their styles were considerably different. Hunt and Kramer had a cannonball service and were formidable smashers from the midcourt. The Australians were infinitely the better volleyers.
