SAINT ANDREW SOCIETY

VISITORS FROM MANAWATU. PIPE BANDS ON PARADE. After the complimentary letter received recently from the Wellington Caledonian Society, it Avas not surprising to learn of the pleasure and surprise of the St. Andrew Society s Manawatu visitors on finding Saturday evening’s gathering such a' truly Scottish function. The visitors, numbering 40 or 50, were first entertained at tea and subsequently their pipe band, in conjunction with the Wairarapa College Band, played up and down Queen Street. At the gathering, Scottish and oldtime dancing proceeded till midnight, when “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem were sung. There was a large crowd at the gathering, though the attachment of many persons to their radio sets during the present crisis relieved some of the congestion that has marked previous gatherings. ' During the evening, a sailor’s hornpipe was skilfully danced by Drummer Terry Broad, of the visiting band. The following pipers contributed to the dance music: Pipe-Maor V. J. Nicholson, Pipe-Sergeant G. Pilcher, PipeCorporal G. Robinson and Piper J. Patterson. all of the visiting band, and Pipe-Corporal L. Pither of the College Band. Both bands delighted those present Avith selections during the evening.
