BasketbalpTourney. > A knockout six-a-side basketball tourney was played on the Wairarapa College grounds on Saturday, in order to raise funds for the lona Club. The results of the finals were: Girls, Macduff’s Ltd beat Lancers; boys, Catholic Club beat P. and T. Masterton East School Dance. The. Masterton East School Dance on Saturday night was favoured with a good attendance. A most enjoyable time was spent to music supplied by Mr J. West. Extras were played by Mr H. Hood. Mr S. N. Ihaka carried out the duties of M.C. in a most capable manner. A tasty supper was provided by the Ladies’ Committee. The dances will be continued fortnightly. Staff Dance. A most enjoyable dance was held in the Arcade Hall on Saturday night by the staff of Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd., there being a large attendance. The M.’sC. were Messrs N. . Daniell and E. F. Esler and McKay’s Orchestra supplied the music. The Monte Carlo competition was Avon by Miss N. SteAvai’t and partner. A ladies committee was responsible for the supper arrangements. It is intended to hold another dance in the near future. Youth Shot in Head.

Shortly before 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, one of a party of young ipen engaged in target practice with pearifles on the riverbank at Raupere (Hawke’s Bay) was shot in the back of the head. The victim of the accident, Mr Kenneth Ralph Crookes, aged 18, Hastings, was immediately taken to the Hastings Memorial Hospital. It Avas stated last night that his condition is satisfactory, though the seriousness of the Avound will not be known till an X-ray has been taken.

Services of Intercession. Special services of intercession were held at Masterton churches yesterday, there being large congregations in all cases. At the Masterton Methodist Church last evening the Rev F. J. Parker spoke on “The Clash of Nations. The National Anthem was sung at the commencement of the service held at St MattheAv's. The Lansdowne Presbyterian Church held services at Rangitumau and Kopuaranga. besides Lansdowne.

50th Anniversary Token. A commemorative silver token, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the Colony of New Zealand in 1890, is in the possession of a Masterton resident. Avho received it when he was a boy. On one side the token has a view of Queen’s Wharf, Wellington, with the words: “In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Colony, 1890” while on the other side is shown a vieAV of Port Nicholson with a barque in the foreground. On this side appear the words “Wellington, N.Z., January, 1840.”

Incident at Wellington Heads. Two rounds Avere fired by the Wellington defences yesterday morning to “bring to” the S.S. City of Delhi for examination purposes at the entrance to the port. Signals from the examination steamer had not been obeyed, and the officer then signalled the examination battery to bring the ship to or stop her. This was done by firing a round of plugged shell across her bows, and a second round was necessary before the order Avas obeyed. On board■ ing the City of Delhi the examining officer was informed that his signals had not been understood.
