GOLF NOTES
RIVERSIDE CLUB ACTIVITIES RECENT BOGEY ROUND. COMMENT ON THE PLAY. , (By “Long Drive.”) The members of the Riverside Golf Club played a bogey round on Saturday. The day was excellent for golf but the greens were not as good as they were the previous Saturday and many short putts were missed. ,By completing the course in 80, 14, 66, D. Carruthers’s card shows that he has returned to form. The best hole on this card was a “birdie” 3 on the 18th. H. Knox played well, returning a net 71. Playing in a competition match play on handicap this player defeated V. C. Taylor one up. D. Wellington also played well, returning a card of 70 net and finishing 3 down on bogey, this player doing the “Pines” in a “birdie” 3. R. Wellington found the going rather hard for the first 9, taking 48. On the second 9 his score was 40, 88, 16, 72. The surprise of the day was the defeat of A. E. Wells in the second round of the junior championship by M. Finlayson. Wells was the favourite for the junior championship this year. Congratulations must go to M. Finlayson for the splendid game he played. A rather patchy round was played by H. Orrell. For the first 9 holes his score was 43 and the second nine 51, after taking eleven on the “Kumbak.”
W. Gemmell has at last had his handicap reduced. This player has been playing to his handicap for some weeks past but on Saturday he excelled himself and returned a card of 66 net. R. Hatch returned a card of 68 net. This is good scoring as no less than five sixes appear on his card. Another player who must be getting plenty of practice- is G. Longworth; as he also returned a car'd of 68 net. A card of 67 net was returned by W. Palamontain. This member has been playing very well of late. Included in his card were-“birdie” 3 at the second and sixth holes. F. Pool returned to form and handed in a card of 67 net. He finished all square in the bogey competition. The match of the season was played over the weekend between D. Costello and W. Petty, the former winning onl the 22nd green. Petty’s failure to hole a foot putt on the seventh cost him -the match.
During the coming weekend the second round of the men’s championship games will be played.
