WINGATUI COURSE WILL BE IN GOOD ORDER
FORM OF MOST HORSES UNKNOWN
(BY
“CARBINE.”)
Reports from the South Island state that after a top-dressing of nearly two feet of snow the course proper at Wingatui has made a marvellous recovery land will be in better order for the Otago Hunt Club's meeting tomorrow than was expected. Good fields have been entered in all events, but in the majority of cases the form is almost unknown and therefore the punter is advised to be wary.
Pink Robe should not be without friends. In the June Hurdle Handicap at Dunedin last season Pink Robe scored an impressive victory, but failed in subsequent races. However, certain quarters believe that she is right, as this season she has shown glimpses of form. Giggleswick does not impress. Last Link must be given a show, while the chances of Corban must be considered. Red Terror is another in good form and is about due for a win. Ballad and Bad News will also be on hand for most of the journey. Support, however, may come for Pink Robe Last Link Red Terror BROCKVILLE TROTTING HANDICAP; 3.5 class; L} miles. The best credentials appear to be presented by Kansas City. Jack Bond, who contested three-year-old races in Southland last season, is said to be a good thing and in many circles is expected to be in the money. Mendel might upset matters, while Allen Wrack should be on hand. However, in an open event support may be forthcoming for Kansas City Jack Bond Allen Wrack OTAGO HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE; about 2| miles. Quinopal at 11.2 will also find support and the chances of this horse must not be thrown aside. Sunny Comet is another who will be liked and is expected to run a good race. Royston has not raced foi' about a year, but is reported to have been schooling well and will probably be fairly well backed. Of the others Surcoat and King Willow may be in the hunt. Popular fancies may include El Caballo Sunny Comet Royston PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP; 5 furlongs.
Lord Midas ..7 7 The President’s Handicap, a distance of five furlongs, has attracted a good field and an interesting race should result. Astaire will probably be liked and should be in the running. Flame Queen won over a furlong further at South Canterbury recently. Donadea at 8.6 and Brilliant Boa at 7.12 might be worth following up while at 7.12 Pink Dress looks good. The chances of Lord Midas must also be considered as he is in good shape and is capable of winning in this company. Favourites, however, may include Flame Queen Lord Midas Pink Dress TALLY HO HANDICAP; 1 mile.
The Tally Ho handicap is another event that should produce good racing. Top-weight with 9.0 up is Night Wings, who is bracketed with Monipere, but she has hardly had enough work yet to make her a candidate. On his running at Riccarton, Monipere, who annexed this event last year, must be given a great show and is almost sure to be heavily backed. Valantua and Balmenter might not be far away when the numbers go up and in any *case will be on hand to make things interesting. Mount Vai also looks a prospect while Straightdell is expected by many to be in the cash. Pink Robe, if reserved, will also find support. However, final fancies may include Monipere Straightdell Balmenter

The distance should suit Marque, while Royal Chief from the 24-yard mark should have plenty of friends. Jack Bond, Allen Wrack and Mendel should all help to make the race interesting. Support may come for Royal Chief Marque Bankstock HUNTERS’ FLAT HANDICAP; 1 mile
A good field will face the starter in the Hunters’ Flat Handicap. Osculate has been out of action for some time and may be in need of a race or two to strike form. Ashaway will also command respect and should not be far away when the final numbers go up. Turaki beat a good field in the Highweight Handicap at Wyndham last New Year’s Day and with only 9.11 looks a good bet. Guste and Bad News are also likely to have friends and should make the going interesting. Final Selections may include Turaki Ashaway Guste VAUXHALL HANDICAP; 6 furlongs. Straightdell ..9 6 Prince
The last race of the day, the Vauxhall Handicap, finds Astaire topweight with 9.7 Then comes Straightdell with 9.6. Both these horses are earlier starters, but in the event of them not starting in the other races they will probably command plenty of support. Flame Queen is also entered in a previous race but at the weight cannot be lightly passed by. Hunting Chorus on recent form should command support and is expected to race well. Gusto and Prince Ruenalf will also keep the leaders well in sight, while Night Pal might upset calculation. Those in favour may be Flame QUeen Hunting Chorus. Night Pal EGMONT=WANGANUI COMBINED HUNT MEETING. CHIEF EVENT TO LITTLE BRITON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 31. The feature of the racing at New Plymouth today at the opening of the combined hunts meeting was the win of the 2900 ■ guinea colt Beaulivre at his first appearance as a three-year-old. He met a fairly strong field of sprinters over six furlongs and, though he did not have an easy win, he accomplished his task in a very satisfying fashion for one of his age so early in the season. The main jumping event on the programme, the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeplechase, was won easily by the Auckland representative, Little Briton, and the Te Rapa stable of A. Winder won a double on the flat with Hum a Song and Gaine's Choice. ■ Except for a slight shower halfway through the programme, the weather was fine and bright and the attendance was good. The totalisator handled £14,102 (win £6792 10s, place £7309 10s), an increase of £3042 10s on the opening day last year. The track was slow but in excellent order. Results: —

The extent to which a horse is affected in England by not being eligible for the Stud Book was evidenced when Thankerton was offered at the Newmarket sales last month. Halfbrother, by Manna, to that great mare, Quashed, he ran third in the 1936 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby but he realised only 30gns at auction. As a yearling he was sold for 4,Boogns. Owing to rating as half-bred, Thankerton is not even eligible to compete for a premium given by the Hunters' Improvement Society (from a grant made by the Racecourse Betting Control Board) to thoroughbred stallions which travelled certain districts and covered half-bred mare at a low fee. Despite being debarred from the Stud Book, Thankerton was such a good galloper himself, and is related to many others, that it would be possible for him to sire good racehorses, but, of course, he will never be afforded the opportunity with mare of any class.
