Postage Deficiencies.

A complaint was made recently by a correspondent that 2d double deficiency had been .charged by the Posl Office on a letter that already bore, to all appearances, sufficient postage. The explanation for this charge, according to the Masterton Post Office authorities, is that the letter was probably posted in a late fee box. No penalty was charged on letters posted unsealed and there was no charge for services rendered by the Dead Letter branch of the Post Office, but if a letter was posted with insufficient postage, naturally the only course was to collect the deficiency when the letter was returned to the sender. Centennial Pageant. The Primate of New Zealand, 'Archbishop Averill, - will act the part of Samuel Marsden in Centennial pageantry at the Bay of Islands in January. The pageant will take the form of a review of northern history, in which hundreds of Europeans and Maoris will take part. The Prime Minister. Mr Savage, will be a spectator. The first episode to be staged is the jirrival of the Maori canoes in New Zealand about 1350. at the time of the great migration. The next episode will be the landing of Captain Cook in 1769. and after this will be the arrival of Marsden. The arrival of Captain Hobson and Hone Heke’s war in the north will also be portrayed. From 1845 to 1914 will be covered by showing the pioneer settlers and farming methods. The pageant will conclude with a parade of modern progress.
