CUP HOLDERS IN STRONG POSITION. WELLINGTON BEAT WAIRARAPA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, August 30. With one day remaining of section play in the Dominion women’s hockey championship, Eastern, holders of .the K. Cup for the last five years, are in a virtually unassailable position in section B. ’ Provided they are not beaten tomorrow they are certain to be one of the finalists for Saturday. In section A, Ashburton, runners-up last year, and Canterbury, third for the last three years, are on terms, and their meeting tomorrow will decide section honours. Sectional points to date, with two for a win and one for a draw, are: Section A. Ashburton 6, Canterbury G, Feilding 4, Marlborough 4, Auckland 3, Poverty Bay 1. Section B: Eastern 8. Wellington G, Wairarapa 5, Wanganui 5, Southland 0, Marlborough B, 0. After a thunderstorm and heavy rain early this morning the grounds were under water, but pumping operations, hot sunshine and a drying wind effected a marvellous recovery before time for play, and conditions were again ideal. Eastern, the only team at the tournament so far to win all matches, beat Southland 9-nil. This brought their total of goals to 29, while they are preserving their own net intact. Two other decisive wins in section B were gained by Wanganui and'Wellington, who registered victories by 7-nil and 5-nil respectively. Another high-scor-ing game saw Ashburton secure an 8nil verdict. Marlborough A went down down to Auckland, who have come with a late run. Results: Section A, Canterbury 3, Feilding 2; Auckland 1, Marlborough A 0; Ashburton 8, Poverty Bay 0. Section B: Eastern 9, Southland 0; Wellington 5, Wairarapa 0; Wanganui 7, Marlborough B 0.
