MRS HAWKSWORTH SCORES NOTABLE WIN. INJURY TO MISS KERR. Play in the championship events of the North Island and Wellington badminton tournament, at the Winter Show Stadium, on Tuesday night, was marred by an accident to Miss Mavis Kerr, the New Zealand singles champion, who sprained her ankle badly on the last point of a mixed doubles match she was playing with G. A. Pearce against J. Lulham and Mrs D. Young, of Wairarapa. Miss Kerr smashed and, anticipating a reply, turned to run back. She was given attention both on and off the court. Later, she returned to Masterton, and it is not certain that she will be available for the remainder of the tournament. Pearce’s defeat of J. J. Payton, the holder of the North Island title, in three sets was one of the feature matches of the night. Hawksworth and R. G. Pattinson made impressive appearances and Miss Nancy I’ leming dropped only one point against Miss Betty Payton. Mrs Hawksworth caused surprise by her heavy defeat of Miss Lorna Berry, a Wellington representative who played particularly well in the New Zealand tournament at New Plymouth last week.
