TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Egmont-Wangamii Hunt Fields Under Review GLENVANE LOOKS STRONG CANDIDATE IN STEEPLECHASE BEAULIVRE FANCIED OVER SIX FURLONGS (BY “CARBINE.”) Excellent fields will contest the first day of the Combined Taranaki and lEgmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting at New Plymouth tomorrow. The second day’s racing will take place on September 2. The betting will be wih-and-place. Chief interest will probably be centred round the EgmontWanganui Hunt Cup Steeplechase, a distance of about two and a half miles. Top-weight in this event is Glenvane, who goes to the barrier with 11.8 up. The next is Wykemist with 10.1. In the Waihau Handicap Beaulivre is a runner and this race will be watched with considerable interest by all race-goers throughout the Dominion. “Carbine” is of the opinion that Beaulivre will not be far away in the run home.

12.0— TRIAL HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE. About 2 miles.

The first race on the programme is the Trial Hunters’ Steeplechase, a distance of about two miles. All the horses will carry 10.0. Ararata was a runner in the Greenmount Hunters’ Steeplechase at the recent Pakuranga

meeting where he fell at the fifth fence. Nevertheless this horse is sure to command support and might not be far away at the encl. Cynical Jack is a horse capable of upsetting this field, while Daniel Boon and After Dark cannot be overlooked. Car Leaf has had plenty of chances but has never done anything out of the ordinary. Dozie Boy might be a possibility. Sir Acre looks a good bet and so does Civic Reception. ■ However, support may come for Ararata Sir Acre Dozie Boy

Colossal Chief 8 5 Raidora 8 5 The Weraroa Slakes will be run in two divisions, all the runners carrying 8.5. Solitary is a good one if in form and should be hard to beat. Captain Bligh did not race much last season and may be in need of a race or two. Minority is expected, in well informed circles, to run a good race. This horse has plenty of pace and five furlongs might be just the right distance. Another candidate who impresses is Colossal Chief. Of the rest little of their form is known, but Social Credit would appear to have a fair chance. The public may support M inority Solitary Colossal Chief 2.5— WHENUAKURA HACK HANDICAP: about 7 furlongs.

Law 8 0 In the Whenuakura Hack Handicap Hagen is expected to go well. Then comes Liberal Mint, a runner whose possibilities must be seriously considered. Kaiwaka and Viracious follow and both these have a chance of win - ning this event. Prime Quality and Susan are also capable of upsetting the field, while Mother-in-Law and High Test will not be far away at. the finish. Of the others. Young Charles and Yed Prior appear the best but in an open event the public may favour Hagen Liberal’s Mint Kaiwaka

S) 0 Longfellow .. .. 9 0 Glenvane must be given a great show as he is in good fettle. Wykemistwill’.also be liked and as they turn for home should not be far behind. Red Mint is very popular in certain quarters, while the chances of Little Briton are not. to be treated too lightly. Book Law is a horse capable of upsetting calculations, while Sabatini might not be • without, support. Public opinion may, however, favour Glenvane Wykemist Little Briton WAIHAU HANDICAP; 6 furlongs.

The Waihau Handicap may prove to be the most interesting and exciting on the day’s programme. Top weight is Orate who should run well. Then comes Race Call, whose chance of a place are not to be overlooked. With 8.6 up Beaulivre looks a great bet and will probably start favourite. Notium is a good one but might need a race or two. Young Paddon should not be far away when the numbers go up, while in many quarters Anopheles is held in strong favour. Hunting Blood is another who might be in the limelight. Six furlongs seems too short for El Meynell. Fils de Vaals is a runner who may pull off a surprise. Those finding favour may include Beaulivre Young Paddon Anopheles 4.15— LADIES' BRACELET HANDICAP;

I Top-weight in the Ladies’ Bracelet | ! Handicap. Halley, might not be a star-; : ter. Kohika always does well in these i i events and must again be given a ■ chance. Pekoe can be depended on to make the going interesting and after wiimimz well at Pakuranga on August 19 Gaine’s Choice will probably start a favourite. Baron Bold will take a lot of shaking off and Glenthawn is expected to be on hand for most of the journey. Of the rest. In Command and i Hokumai look the best. The public I may follow Gaine’s Choice Kohika Baron Bold 5.0— WAVERLEY HACK HANDICAP:

1 The concluding event, on the day’s , programme will be the Waverley Hack I Handicap. Hagen, if a starter, must be I given every show.especially if he does i not start in the Whenuakura Hack i Handicap. Maxam at 9.5 looks a likely . sort and should be in the running. Viracious. if a runner, will also bo well worth while considering. Captain Tudor and Sir Lysander might upset matters. With only 8.2 up Saxon Tor looks like having an excellent chance and in many quarters this horse is expected to do big things. Supported horses may be Saxon Tor Maxam ' Viracious, OTAGO HUNT CLUB ACCEPTORS FOR SATURDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. August 30.
