CARTERTON BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL CENTENNIAL PROPOSAL. ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC INSPECTOR. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, the Mayor (Mr D. Taverner) presiding. There were also present Councillors O. Wolters. W. A. Hart. H. Mortenson. L. M. Clark. C. E. Stevens. C. De Lacey and J. Udy. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. McKenzie and R. A. Copeland. The secretary of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society wrote asking the Council to observe Thursday. October 26 (People’s Day of the show) a public holiday as from 10 o’clock a.m. The letter was referred to the Tradesmen’s Association to deal with.
A letter from the Wairarapa Hospital Board in regard to the estimated levy on the Council for the year (£699 ss) was received.
Several ratepayers residing in Howard Street wrote asking permission to plant horse chestnut trees on either side of the street. The request was granted. The secretary of Wairarapa District Zone Committee wrote stating that Carterton’s proposal for the alteration of the baths as a Centennial gesture was not approved and suggesting a further proposal. It was resolved to again submit a proposal in connection with the baths for the consideration of the committee and that it be for additions.
The Main Highways Board wrote notifying that it did not intend to increase the mileage on Main Highways and that the Board was unable to favourably consider any application submitted by the Council in connection therewith. The letter was received.
The question of further traffic in ■ spector for the Hawke’s Bay district was before the Council, but it was pointed out the Department could not provide the necessary funds for the purpose. It was resolved that the Council, along with other bodies, should make a grant for the provision as was the case when traffic inspectors were appointed. The Council decided to grant £lO toward the cost of a further inspector up to March 31 next. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £1344 16s Id, of which £659 17s 2d was for rates. The credit balance stood at £958 16s sd. Accounts amounting to £1478 15s Id were passed for payment in connection with the Distruct Fund.
The Gasworks account showed that the receipts since the last meeting were £327 19s 4d, and there was a bank balance of £776 Is Id. Accounts amounting to £460 6s lid were presented and passed. It was resolved that notice be sent to a property owner in Broklyn Road to trim trees back to the boundary fence and that he be given seven days in which to do the work, failing which action would be taken. Another resident is to be asked to remove a tree on the western side of the railway.
The question of removing flood lights in Memorial Square and replacing the same with one mercury vapour light on the eastern side of the square is to be submitted to the Power Board engineer. The metalling of Richmond Road was before the Council and left to the Works Committee to consider. The reports of the Works Committee, Gas Committee and Road Foreman were read and adopted. It was decided to allow the P. and T. Department to erect a six foot iron fence on their property and that the borough continue the fence on to the borough property. The question of a new residence was before the Council for which plans were submitted and it was decided the specifications must also be submitted for approval.
