WARM APPROVAL
OF MR CHAMBERLAIN’S SPEECH EXPRESSED UNOFFICIALLY IN WASHINGTON. UTAH SENATOR'S PREDICTION. (Received This Day. 10.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 29. Government circles expressed warm though unofficial approval of Mr Chamberlain's declaration in the House of Commons that England will stick b?z her pledge to Poland. They noted with satisfaction, too. that Mr Chamberlain again urged, as had President Roosevelt. that Germany and Poland should settle their dispute pacifically. Administration quarters affirmed a belief that a further retreat before threats of totalitarian force could lend only to disaster, but that a firm stand, coupled with an honest desire to negotiate pacifically. might avert war. Senator Thomas (Utah) issued a statement predicting that there would be no general war in Europe, but that if it occurred Congress would “act impulsively and throw the existing neutrality law out of the window.” OPINION IN FRANCE STRONG SPEECH ON VITAL OCCASION. WHILE HITLER IS MAKING DECISION. (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) PARIS, August 29. Mr Chamberlain’s speech is endorsed as one of the strongest he has made and as vitally important, as it was delivered on the day on which jHerr Hitler was making his final decision. WELL RECEIVED IN POLAND (Received This Day. 12.25 p.m.) WARSAW. August 29. Mr Chamberlain's speech is well received here, especially the passages referring to the firmness of British policy.
