THREAT TO POLISH VITAL INTERESTS I OCCUPATION OF SLOVAKIA. FOREIGN MINISTER’S PROTEST. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) WARSAW, August 29. An official communique describes the German occupation of Slovakia as an act of aggression against Polish vital interests and a threat to Polish security. Colonel Beck has protested to the Slovakian Ambassador. ACTION BY SOVIET WESTERN GARRISONS STRENGTHENED. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) MOSCOW. August 29. The Tass Agency states that in view of the aggravation of the situation in Eastern Europe and the possibility of all kinds of surprises, the Soviet command has decided to increase the strength of garrisons on the western frontiers. The Soviet Supreme Council meets on Thursday. EVACUATION PLAN PRESENTED BY DEPUTATION. REJECTED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT. (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON. August 29. The Government rejected Mr A. Greenwood’s plan, in the House of Commons, for an immediate evacuation of women and children from London when it was presented at No 10 Downing Street, by a deputation consisting of Mr Herbert Morrison, Sir Walter Citrine and Miss Barbara Gould, Labour Party chairman. MORE HOPEFUL OUTLOOK PRICES RISE IN CITY OF LONDON. BROAD ADVANCE IN STOCKS & SHARES. (Received This Day. 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, August 29. Sentiment in the city has markedly improved and cautious optimism has become general. It is sufficient to bring a fairly broad advance in prices. Giltedged securities were bought above the official minima, and Far Eastern bonds were sharply marked up, while home industrials, rubbers, oils and gold shares all were dearer. The commodity markets similarly are inclined to take a more hopeful view of the,prospects of peace. SEARCH OF SHIPS ORDER IN EGYPT. (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) Cairo, August 29. Egypt has ordered all ships entering Egyptian ports to undergo search. The Italian Minister saw the Premier and affirmed Italy's traditional friendship with Egypt but the Government is taking all precautions.
