WOMEN’S HOCKEY
DOMINION TOURNEY WAIRARAPA BEAT SOUTHLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, August 28. Running true to their form of the past eight years, the New Zealand women’s hockey champions, Eastern Southland, beat Wanganui by 8 to nil on the second day of the Dominion tournament. Marlborough A provided a surprise by accounting for the strong Ashburton team, runners-up last year. A keen game saw Marlborough win by one to nil. The weather was fine though overcast and the grounds were in good order. One of the highest scores for several years was registered by Canterbury in outclassing Poverty Bay 11 to 1. Fielding unexpectedly beat the Auckland side by 3 to 2. This was the first spectacular contest.
With favourable conditions, teams maintained a standard equal to that of previous tournaments. At this stage it appears that Eastern Southland will win section B. with Canterbury and Marlborough A strongest contenders in Section A. Results: —
Section A: Marlborough A 1. Ashburton 0; Canterbury 11. Poverty Bay 1; Feilding 3, Auckland 2. Section B: Eastern 8, Wanganui 0; Wellington 5. Marlborough B 1; Wairarapa 3, Southland 2.
