GOLF NOTES

RIVERSIDE CLUB CONTESTS COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER COMPETITIONS. (By “Long Drive.”) During the weekend the conditions were excellent for golf on the Riverside links and many good scores were registered by members of the club who competed in the third round of a nei aggregate competition. All the remaining games in the first round of the championship were competed during the weekend. A player who returned a good card on Saturday was J. Connell. He has been off his game some time but now seems to be handling his clubs with much more confidence. H. Ordell, a left hander, has been playing good golf of late. On Saturday he returned a card of 71 net, and on Sunday defeated H. Knox in the second round of the junior championship. On the card F. Shearer handed in there was not a bad hole and it is.rather surprising that this player was defeated by G. Beecroft in the intermediate championship on the following day. The best card handed in on Saturday was that of V. Taylor. . He has been practising very hard of late and has • returned some good cards. F. E. Wells was right on his game and defeated W. Gilliland 5 and 4 in the first round of the junior championship. B. Braggins did not play his usual steady game on Saturday but on Sunday, playing in a competition on match play, he was rather unlucky to be defeated by V. C. Taylor on the nineteenth green. A. Carstens returned a card of 70 net. He has been rather unlucky this season. When he has been playing competitions on match play his opponents all seem to be right on the top of their form that day. Playing in the first round of the senior championship D. Costello defeated F. Pool 2 up after being 3 down and 5 to go, Costello covering the second nine holes in 35. a The highlight of O. Henshilwood’s | round on Saturday was a birdie 3 on I the Bank, 375 yards. This player re- I turned a card of 67 net. | W. Petty handed in a good card of 70 & net but this score could have been fur- S (her reduced as two sevens appeared f

on his card. S. L. Pye is a junior player who has been improving. He returned a card of 67 net and has had his handicap reduced accordingly. The match that has aroused most interest. in the intermediate championship event was that played during the weekend and resulted in a win for R. Wearne 4 and 3. F. Candy played great golf going out on Saturday. For the first 9 his score was 37. During the weekend this competitor defeated O. Henshilwood in the first round of the senior championship.
