AMATEUR PRELIMINARIES. The Wairarapa Association has been successful in arranging a return bout between Dryden (New Zealand heavyweight champion) and Williams, of Wellington, to take place immediately before the professional match between Forster and Pinder on Tuesday next. This contest will be 5 rounds of 3 minutes each and those who were present at their last meeting will want to see them again. Williams has been keeping particularly fit in anticipation and is keen on evening his score against the champion, who will have to look to his laurels. A new light-heavy in Cavanagh from the Eketahuna Club will meet Tiger Reed, of Featherston and Chappel’s clash in the welterweight with Norris should also provide fireworks. Altogether it is an excellent programme and patrons should be seated early to enjoy every bit of it. The following are iftmes and weights in connection with the amateur preliminaries:—R. Wickens (Masterton) 9.2 v. A. McLeod (Featherston) 9.0; H. Chappell (Masterton) 10.9 v. E. Norris (Eketahuna) 11.3; T. Reed (Featherston) 12.12 v. J. Cavanagh (Eketahuna) 13.5; J. H. Dryden (Featherston) 17.6 v. S. Williams (Wellington) 17.0. Entries close on Monday for the Wairarapa amateur championships which will be held at Featherston on Friday. September 1. The indications are that there will be a large number of entries and hard tussles to hold or gain titles.
