STORED PUMPKINS
WHY THEY GO BAD. There are several things which cause pumpkins in storage to go bad. The most frequent cause is skin puncture or bruises made when growing or harvesting. Breaking or bruising the outside skin allows fungi to enter and set up decay. Some sorts with particularly firm skins will keep longer than others. Then there is the whole question of maturity. The pumpkin is a seed pod, and when the temperature increases it acts on and through the skin, causes decay, and allows the shell to break open and the seeds tc germinate.
