COBB SUCCEEDS

WORLD SPEED RECORD BROKEN TRAVEL AT 368.85 MILES AN HOUR. HOPES OF DOING EVEN BETTER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) BONNEVILLE (Salt Flats). August 23. J. R. Cobb broke the world record with an official speed of 368.85 miles an hour. On the first run Cobb averaged 370.75 miles an hour and on the return run 366.97. Cobb also broke the kilometre record with a'Speed of 369.74 miles an hour. The former speed record was 350.07. Cobb said: "The wind bothered me slightly as I reached the south end so I slowed down slightly as I knew I had gone fast enough northward for the record. I wanted to be sure that I would get back. My motto was safety first even at six miles a minute.” Cobb indicated that he might try for a still faster speed.
