FAREWELL SOCIAL MANAGER’S SERVICES RECOGNISED. (“Times-Age" Special.) The settlers at Kahutara tendered a farewell social to Mr W. J. Dowling, who is leaving the district to reside in Lower Hutt. Mr Campbell Pearce referred to the splendid service Mr Dowling had rendered as manager of the Lake View Dairy Company for the past 18 years. Mr H. C. Playle on behalf of the settlers, asked Mr Dowling to accept a well-filled wallet at the same time extending to the guest of honour the best wishes of the settlers for his future. Mr Dowling suitably replied. DEFENCE LEAGUE ELECTION OF OFFICERS. At a public meeting held in the Town Hall to discuss defence matters those present included Defence League members from Masterton, Carterton and Greytown. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr J. W. Card (who was suffering from a severe cold), Messrs D. H. S. Riddiford. E. C. Holmes, and Howard Booth, president of the Carterton branch. Mr H. Lawson was voted to the chair and introduced the speakers for the evening, Messrs W. H. Barnard, E. G. Hewiu and H. L. Green. The following officers and committee were elected: —President, Mr H. Lawson; secretary-treasurer, Mr N. C. C. Shepherd; committee (with power to add),.Dr and Mrs G. S. Sharp, Mr and Mrs G. W. Brandon, Mrs Lawson. Messrs A. R. Robbins. D. H. S. Riddiford, C. W. Ritchie, H. K. Allen, and J. E. Willett. Enrolment books were taken by those present and the public will be called upon to join and take an interest in the League's objects. Personal Items. Mr J. Anderson. Kahutara, has left the district to reside in Wellington. Mr and Mrs E. Card. Wanganui, and Mrs H. D. McKay, Levin, are the guests of Mr and Miss Card. Awahou. Mrs W. Card, and Misses Eva and Esma Card have returned from their visit to Wanganui, where they attended the Card-Comrae wedding.
