DEEP SEA AQUARIUM
WONDERFUL DISPLAY PROVIDED. The largest privately-owned aquarium in the world is that established by Mr W. K. Vanderbilt on the north shore of Long Island New York. For more than 30 years Mr Vanderbilt has explored the oceans in various yachts that he has owned, and the wonderful specimens of deep-sea creatures he has collected are now maintained in his marine museum. *’
One of the cases in the aquarium is 40ft in length and is a faithful reproduction of a typical scene at the bottom of the ocean. Among the coral reefs and sea growths in it is a sunken wreck and round this swim fishes of all kinds. The collection also includes a whale that weighs four tons, and a devil fish of half that weight, in addition to specimens of the tiniest creatures to be found in the ocean. Perhaps the most remarkable exhibit is a group of pilot fish. These have suction plates on their heads, by means of which they fix themselves on other fish. In this manner they secure free lodging and travel about with their hosts at no cost to themselves.
