ALFREDTON

HECKLER CUP MATCH WIN FOR LOCAL TEAM. (“Times-Age” Speeial.) Saturday last marked the occasion for an enthusiastic invasion of Tiraumea by the Alfredton football team (challengers) for the "Heckler Cup' which has been successfully retained by Tiraumea for the past five years. Messrs lan and Frances McDonald piped the Alfredton team and its enthusiastic supporters to the ground where the match was played. The day was moderately fine, but after the heavy rain which fell prior to Saturday the ground was somewhat heavy. The contest was mainly between the opposing forwards with occasional bright solo efforts by individual backs on either side. After about 30 minutes had elapsed. Alfredton were awarded a penalty and George, from about 35yds out made no mistake with the kick. Give and take play followed until half time sounded with the score Alfredton 3. Tiraumea 0.

On resuming Tiraumea staged many vigorous forward rushed, and had Alfredton on the defensive for a considerable time, but good play on the part of J. Smith, Berney and Groves kept Tiraumea out. Alfredton were not to be den.-d, and after some good play by two of Timaumea backs. Herbert and Belshaw. S. Smith, tne Alfredton winger, snapped up the ball and after a fine run scored a good try in the corner. George failed with the kick. Shortly afterwards Alfredton were awarded another penalty from well out near the side line, and George goaled with a splendid kick'. The whistle sounded soon afterwards making the score Alfredton 9. Tiraumea 0. For Tiraumea, S. Laing, C. Richardson. B. Churchhouse were the outstanding forwards, with Herbert and Bellshaw playing sound games in the backs.

For Alfredton A. Heckler, McGlashan, O. Evans and C. Algie were perhaps the pick of a good pack in the backs, J. Smith. S. Smith and H. George, showed up in many bright movements. The game was capably controlled by Mi’ W. Ratu, of Pongaroa. In the evening a well attended smoke concert which followed the match was presided over by Mr Scott Raieigh, and the Patron of the Tiraumea Club. Mr R. J. Harman presented lhe cup to the captain of the Alfredton team. Mr Hylton George. Mr George in replying said that if the winning of the cup did nothing else but revive football enthusiasm in Alfredton it would fulfil the wish of a great sportsman in the donor of the cup. the late Mr W. H. Heckler, who presented it for competition in. 1914.
