CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special ) The quarterly summoned meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge held last evening was presided over by P.G. Bro C. E. White, there being a fair attendance of members. Sick pay amounting to £l6 13s 4d was passed for payment. Two members were declared on the sick funds and two declared oil' the fund. The District Secretary wrote endorsing a copy of the partial amendment to general rules as adopted by the 1939 M.C. . Bro L. Kilpatrick, Sockburn, wrote advising that he had undergone an operation in Christchurch Hospital and that he was making progress toward recovery. Bro C. J. DeLacey was appointed to represent the Lodge at a general meeting of the Hospital Association to be held in Wellington on Saturday. September 2. The District Secretary wrote in regard to the Lodge's 1935 valuation and asking that particulars of the same be submitted to the Registrar. The secretary was authorised to forward information required.. The Loyal Combination Lodge extended an invitation to lodge members to be present at a social to be held at Johnsonville on Tuesday, August 29. The invitation was accepted with thanks. SETTLERS FAREWELLED MRS M. JOHNSON & FAMILY. There was a large and representative attendance at the Parkvale Hall i on Saturday evening when settlers gathered to farewell Mrs Martin Johnson and her two sons, Charles and Leslie who are shortly leaving the district. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with musical items. At an appropriate interval Mr E. T. Bliss expressed the regret of those present at the departure of the family and said that Mrs Johnson had always been willing to help in 'any way in matters connected with the welfare of the district. He then asked Mrs Johnson to accept a gold wristlet watch, a pair of bedspreads, and pair of eiderdowns, and the boys an engraved fountain pen each, as an expression of their esteem and goodwill. He wished them success in their new venture. Mr Len Johnson, on behalf of his mother, acknowledged the gifts and good wishes, and said that her residence in the district was perhaps unique, as she was born in the district and had lived there ever since. Messrs Charles and Les Johnson also replied. The music for dancing was played by Mrs Ashton, and Miss V. Ward played the extras. Mr Dan Jensen carried out the duties of M.C. in his usual efficient manner.
Supper was provided by the ladies of the district, the tables being decorated in the colours of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, of which Mrs Johnson was a valued member.
The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable gathering to a close. Personal. Mr Jas Lawrence and his son Rex, of Carterton, have returned home after a motor tour in the northern districts. They visited Waitomo. Rotorua and other places of interest and had a pleasant time. Miss Mary Lawrence, who accompaned her father and brother went on to Auckland and is the guest of Miss Fisher. Mr J. Steel, of the staff of the Carterton Branch of the Bank of New Zealand is at present relieving at Wellington headquarters. Birthday Party. There was a large attendance at the Bandroom on Saturday evening on the occasion of the 92nd birthday of Mr W. B. Allen, of Clareville. Each year it has been the custom of Mr Allen to entertain the members of the Carterton Municipal Band, of which he is the patron. This year, unfortunately,Mr Allen was unable to be present through ill-health, but he was represented by Mr W. Toomath, of Wellington. who, with Mr Allen, is a member the Early Settlers' Association. Mr Toomath acknowledged the good wishes expressed on behalf of Mr Allen. The main part of the evening was devoted to dancing to music supplied by Mr T. Udy, while items were given by Mrs C. Corlett, Miss Paterson and Mr A. Kay. The band also played items. The supper was provided by Mr Allen, and was fully appreciated. During the evening raffles for a cushion and a duchess set. both the work of Mr T. Ray. were drawn. They were won by Mrs Dakin, Masterton. and Mr E. Clough. Clareville respectively.
CLAREVILLE CONCERT
EXCELLENT PROGRAMME
A very successful and highly entertaining concert was given by the children of the district in the Clareville Hall last evening to provide funds in aid of the Rest Room of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union that will eventually be erected near the Memorial Square. Carterton. The concert was principally to help along the baby carnival in this instance, for the Belvederc-Taratahi baby. AU the items were given by children and their efforts reflected the greatest credit upon all concerned. The hall was crowded. Great credit is due to the promoters and to those responsible for the training of the children. The programme was as follows: — Pianoforte solo, June Clark; chorus, "Holiday,” Taratahi children; tap
dance. Pat Jensen; chorus. “Whos Dal A' Callin’” and "Polly Wolly Doodle." Clareville children; recitation, Bessie Card: song. June Daysh; chorus by Clareville infants. "Little Mourners," "Little Soldier"; song. Barbara Reid, with Kelvin Stretton; chorus. "Ten Little Nigger Boys.” children; song. Roger and K. Reid; playette, "Highway Man," Taratahi children, parts being taken by Betty Card. Nancy Daysh. Gordon Phelps, and Jeff Daysh: recitation. Leo Lister; recitation, Melvyn Nicholls; chorus, "Toffee Apple Song." children; recitation. Nola Sewell; chorus. ’Umbrella Man." children; recitation. Bill Hannah; duet. Nola Sewell and Beryl Busby, accompanied by Miss C. Berrill; speech chorus, by Clareville children; recitation. Jim Daken. The accompaniments for all of the items outside the one mentioned were kindly played by Mrs K. Reid.
At the conclusion of the programme supper provided by the ladies' committee was handed round. The takings of the concert should materially swell the votes recorded in favour of the Bolvedere-Taralahi baby, John Corbett.
