POSITION IN MANAWATU DISTRICT
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
IM MEDIATE INVESTIGATION PROMISED.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) SHANNON, August 21. "The Public Works Department is fully conscious of the flood dangers surrounding the Manawatu River and its habits, but the department would be foolish to do anything short of striking at the root, of the trouble," said the Minister of Public Works, Mr Semple, in reply to a large deputation of settlers from the Buckley, Moutoa, Koputaroa and Makerua districts, which met him in the Shannon Municipal Chambers this afternoon. Mr Semple said that before he made any promises he wanted to have an estimate of the damage caused by the flood and what was involved in carrying out the necessary works. He gave an undertaking that an immediate investigation would be made by Mr A. P. Grant, rivers control en- / gineer attached to ■ the department, / who would seek first-hand information from settlers who had long experience of the river and its vagaries. His undertaking to have- an immediate investigation was greeted with cheers by the deputation, which altogether numbered about 100.
