MINIATURE RIFLES

WAIRARAPA V. BUSH

RETURN MATCH AT PAHIATUA

WIN FOR HOME TEAM

(“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday evening the Wairarapa' representative miniature rifle team: travelled to Pahiatua to fire a return’

match against the Bush representatives and suffered defeat by seven points. Owing to sickness Wairarapa were without the services of eight of their picked team, and consequently, al the last minute were faced with arranging for substitutes. The visitors were hospitably entertained by the Bush Association and given a warm welcome.

At the supper adjournment Mr W. Johnson, president of the Wairarapa Association, thanked the Bush members for their hospitality and congratulated them upon their success. He said he had a pleasant duty to perform. After the first match at Carterton it had been arranged between Messrs L. J. Heayns (president of the Bush Association) and Mr C. J. DeLacey (secretary of the Wairarapa Association) to donate a cup for competition which would be held by each team as they won it. The cup bore the inscription "Wairarapa-Bush Miniature Rifle Associations, presented by L. J. Heayns and C. J. DeLacey. 1939." The winners each year will bear the cost of engraving and the cup cannot be won outright. On behalf of the donors he had pleasure in asking Mr Heayns to accept the cup as the winners on this occasion (applause). Mr Johnson then asked both teams to give three cheers to the donors of the cup. being hearty responded to.

Mr Heayns. on behalf of his association. thanked Mr Johnson for his kindly remarks, and said that on this occasion the win of Bush was due to Wairarapa not being fully represented, but the substitutes had fired well: in any case the margin of winning points would not have been very large. He wished to mention that the trophy was Mr DeLacey's thought and he readily agreed to be associated with him in the purchase of the same. He was pleased to be able to hold it on the first occasion for the Bush team. The following are the scores:—
