GLADSTONE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE FIFTH BIRTHDAY PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) In spite of the very wet weather there was a very large attendance ol members and visitors on the occasion of the fifth birthday of the Gladstone Women's Institute. The president (Mrs McKay) welcomed visitors from (he following Institutes: Carterton. Kaituna-Fernridge, Te Ore Ore. Parkvale. Matarawa-Dalcfield, Solway-Ma-naia, Pirinoa. One member from each was presented with a spray. Several congratulatory telegrams were received.

Mrs McKay. in an appropriate speech, made a presentation to the retiring secretary, Miss Turley, who is leaving the district to take up a new career. Miss Turley suitably replied. Miss J. Palmer was appointed in succession to Miss Turley. Mrs Miller Hope gave a very interesting talk on music. She was assisted by Mrs Bent. Mrs Spate and Miss Jamieson. A birthday cake made and donated by Mrs Cave and iced by Mrs Fisher was decorated with five candles which were lighted by Mrs Lyons, the oldest member, and were extinguished by Miss J. Palmer, the second youngest member. Mrs McKay then called upon Mrs Joblin, president of the Wairarapa Federation, to cut the cake. Afternoon tea was served by the committee and the singing of the National Anthem brought a happy gathering to a close. The competitions were won by Mrs Riddle 1. Mrs Joblin 2, and Miss Crew 1, Miss N. Wyeth 2.
